Never in the act of the maniupulating her sexuality for gain. Then I can definitely see how this film could lead one to believe that it is highly misogynistic.

Might have to rethink my position with the film now...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470604276410220159.post-65585019046499284642010-10-20T23:02:52.142-04:002010-10-20T23:02:52.142-04:00Great to see the discussion this one has provoked....Great to see the discussion this one has provoked. Yes, I remember the Facebook furor that ensued after I interviewed Meir Zarchi... And Cortez, I think the issue of misogyny here has a lot to do with the concept of a woman exploiting her sexuality to destroy men, which has long been one of the foundations of woman-hating ideology. You also have the notion of the victim seducing her attackers which plays into a male sexual fantasy (even if it does end with their death, the fact remains).B-Solhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10717121313061173603noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470604276410220159.post-39720462167738587442010-10-20T21:02:17.743-04:002010-10-20T21:02:17.743-04:00Great discussions here and an excellent post.

But I do think there is a re-watch quality there. Call me crazy. The scene that gets to me the most, is when you see Dalle in the house for the first time as the expectant mother is on the couch and you can see her figure in the study. The camera zooms out and her figure disappears into it. Freaks me out everytime.

As for ISOYG, I never thought of it as being misogynistic. Color me ignorant if so but isn't the main concept or idea of misogyny have to deal with an outright hatred of women? She got her revenge and used her sexuality as a weapon (rather than being subservient) to lure the men and kill them. How exactly is that misogynistic? Forgive me if I don't understand what the word means completely.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470604276410220159.post-86089328157571167192010-10-20T10:30:08.041-04:002010-10-20T10:30:08.041-04:00Renee! It sums up my thoughts pretty well. As well as my review at Fused Film. It's a tragically sexist film masquerading as a feminist film, and that makes all the more abominable.Missy Y.http://babyjanehudson.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470604276410220159.post-25517666431696280722010-10-20T09:00:04.749-04:002010-10-20T09:00:04.749-04:00I've been meaning to watch Inside. Inside touches my line, maybe puts a toe or two over it, but is just cartoonish enough to not completely cross it. Self-inflicted tracheotomies, flamethrower aerosol cans, and jury-rigged polearms strip just enough of the edge off the ghastly (and sadly, all too real) premise to make it palatable. And the journey the protagonist is on to save her unborn child, even if it means making a really terrible sacrifice, is compelling enough (in my estimation) to raise it above simple exploitation. I think Martyrs, too, has a compelling statement (though I'm hard-pressed to articulate it), but it's too real for me to subject myself to it often (I've seen it twice, the second time only because a horror-loving friend really wanted to see it...I have no plans on revisiting it). And then there are things like August Underground that I just have no desire to watch even once...I can't imagine there's enough of an artistic vision there to elevate it beyond crass brutality, and without that I don't even bother...if I just want to challenge myself with senseless violence (which I don't), the internet is always available.

My feelings about ISOYG are pretty much in line with that...no doubt Brian remembers the big FB comment-storm of not that long ago. Rape is pretty triggery for me and while I don't think it's off limits as a topic for artistic exploration and commentary, I'm immediately dubious of any treatment of it that doesn't involve a woman's perspective. The seduction stuff in that film is rape fantasy via the male ego, and it's pretty abhorrent. I have a similar problem with Deadgirl.

Anyway, that was rambly and even a little defensive! I must feel guilty for defending Inside.Reneehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15688972226193612658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470604276410220159.post-1808962589510610442010-10-20T00:32:24.211-04:002010-10-20T00:32:24.211-04:00Just the alluring presence of Beatrice Dalle makes...Just the alluring presence of Beatrice Dalle makes this an instant rewatch, for me at least.Don't Get Nasty Brotherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12851094827079500164noreply@blogger.com
