Jack the Ripper has always had an effect on me. That his crimes were so brutal, so brazen, and that they have gone unsolved makes the Ripper a true to life horror. And the Ripper legend is only enhanced by the myriad of theories surrounding who he might be.
After watching these trailers I noticed a minor omission. Though it may not qualify as a horror movie, I always thought it was a lot of fun: Time After Time (1979), where H.G. Wells pursues the Ripper into modern day America.
Wonderful collection of trailers for Jack. And you have a great include in there. I haven't seen Jack's Back (a favorite of mine for Spader and the neat way Jack is woven into the story of twins) in ages! Too bad it's still not out in a Region 1 disk.
That's also a good pickup for RayRay in naming Time After Time. If I could, I'd mention (only because it was so effectively done) Jack is also in Pabst's great silent film, Pandora's Box, at the end.
I'd also like to namedrop the exceptional Time After Time. Interesting enough, writer and director Nicholas Meyer went on to write and direct the very best Star Trek films, including The Wrath of Khan. :D
One thing you've missed out on, but sadly there doesn't seem to be a trailer for, is in my humble opinion the best film made about Jack The Ripper, the 1988 made for TV film starring Michael Caine:
It really doesn't get much better, it's incredibly well made for a TV film, and it's one of the most detailed, engrossing accounts of the Ripper. I would highly, highly recommend it to anyone interested in this subject, and you cannot for my money get a better Abberline than Michael Caine.

I'll just add that I've always felt that From Hell the film wasn't as much an adaptation of Moore's exceptional graphic novel as it was a poor imitation of the Michael Cane film.
Ah yes, Time After Time, forgot that featured Jack the Ripper. I did find a trailer for the 1988 TV movie, but I wanted to keep it to theatrical films. And as the The Lodger, I found a trailer, but embedding was forbidden...

ReplyDeleteNo trailer for it, but The Lodger (1944) is the (historically inaccurate) re-telling of Jack and the Whitechapel murders, as well.
